An upcoming update will enable users to add and manage contacts via the WhatsApp web client, on a Windows PC, and eventually other linked devices. Additionally, users will have the option to save contacts exclusively to WhatsApp without syncing them to a phone. This is particularly useful for those who share a phone with others or manage both work and personal WhatsApp accounts on the same device. Meta emphasizes that this feature will also address the issue of contact loss due to misplaced phones, as contacts will be fully restorable.

In a major advancement, WhatsApp is introducing usernames. This means that you can share a username with someone instead of relying on phone numbers. Meta highlights that this will enhance privacy as it allows for sharing information without revealing personal phone numbers.

The multi-device contact management tool is being gradually rolled out over the coming weeks and months. While there is no specific timeline for the introduction of usernames, WhatsApp has been actively working on various improvements. The app recently introduced enhanced video calling and passkey support on iOS.
