Gmail is adding a ‘Happening Soon’ tab and expanding summaries

Google is expanding Gmail’s AI-powered summary cards, which currently provide contextual snippets for things like incoming packages. Starting today, the cards will now cover a broader range of information, including purchases, events, bills, and travel. Additionally, Gmail is introducing a new “Happening Soon” section that will appear at the top of your inbox, featuring upcoming time-sensitive information. According to Google, these updates reflect changing email usage habits.

The “Happening Soon” section will surface relevant summary cards right when you need them. For example, you might see a card showing that an order you placed last week is out for delivery today. These cards are dynamic and update in real time, ensuring that users have access to the most current information without digging through their inbox.

Each summary card will come with action buttons to streamline tasks. For instance, purchase summary cards will allow you to track packages, view order details, and manage your online orders. Event cards will show upcoming events, provide options to invite friends, or offer directions to the venue. Bill summary cards will help users see, pay, or set reminders for bills via Google Tasks. Meanwhile, travel summary cards will manage reservations, flight check-ins, and display details like hotel check-in and check-out times.

Google is rolling out these features gradually. The purchase summary cards for individual emails are available starting today for Android and iOS, though some users have reported seeing them earlier. The cards for events, bills, travel, and the new “Happening Soon” section will become available over the next few months. Eventually, Google plans to expand the four summary card categories to individual emails, Gmail search, and the “Happening Soon” section, offering a more comprehensive summary card experience across platforms.

While it will take some time before all the features are fully available, Gmail users can expect a more streamlined and time-sensitive email experience as the updates roll out.
