Google is introducing a Gemini-powered update to Gmail for Android and iOS that enhances Smart Replies with more tailored, context-specific suggestions. Initially announced in May, this new feature will analyse the entire email thread to generate responses that better capture the intent of the conversation.

With the update, users can hover over suggested Smart Replies to preview the text before selecting the one that best fits their style or needs. These suggested replies can either be edited for personalization or sent immediately. The goal is to save users time—especially those overwhelmed by their inbox—while offering a broader range of automated responses. Instead of generic options like “Yes, I’m working on it” or “No worries, thanks for the heads up,” the new replies may include a personalized greeting and a signoff, adding more variety and sophistication.

The updated contextual Smart Replies are now available to subscribers of Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium. Currently, the feature is only offered in English and expands on the original Smart Replies feature introduced to Gmail in 2017.
