The original PlayStation, commonly known as the PS1, was released in Japan in late 1994, and its 30th anniversary is fast approaching. To mark this milestone, Sony has unveiled nostalgic redesigns for both the PS5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro, inspired by the classic PS1. These new versions feature the iconic grey colour and retro logo, evoking memories for longtime fans. Sony did something similar for the PS4’s 20th anniversary in 2014, and this release seems aimed at a similar crowd of nostalgic gamers.

This isn’t just a simple redesign. Sony has clearly put effort into it, even though the updated DualSense controller doesn’t exactly replicate the original, it complements the overall look. In addition to the controller, Sony is including retro-style cable connector housing, PlayStation-shaped cable ties, and a vertical stand designed to fit the theme. The packaging itself feels like a trip back to the 1990s, reminiscent of a Toys “R” Us shelf.
There are two bundles available. The PS5 bundle includes the digital edition of the console (without a disc drive), a standard DualSense controller, the retro accessories, and extras like a sticker, a poster, and even a PlayStation-themed paperclip.
The PS5 Pro bundle offers all of that plus a DualSense Edge controller, a retro cover for the optional disc drive, and a charging stand. While the PS5 Pro has been criticized for not looking much different from the regular PS5, it’s hard to complain when it’s decked out in this 1995-inspired design.
Even the PlayStation Portal, Sony’s portable console, is getting a retro makeover, along with redesigned controllers available for separate purchase.
Preorders begin on September 26 at participating retailers and through Sony, with the official release set for November 21, just weeks after the PS5 Pro launches. Sony is only making 12,300 units of the PS5 Pro retro edition, so early preorders are recommended. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but expect the PS5 Pro bundle to be expensive.
