The Sims, one of the most iconic games of the past 25 years, is getting a big-screen adaptation. With over 500 million players familiar with its quirky Simlish language, WooHoo moments, and the Rosebud cheat, fans have a lot to look forward to. Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that Amazon MGM Studios is developing a movie based on the beloved game.

Kate Herron (Loki, The Last of Us) will direct and co-write the film with Briony Redman (Doctor Who). Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is also involved. According to EA’s vice president and Sims general manager, Kate Gorman, the goal is to create something as impactful as the Barbie movie, which is currently the 14th-highest-grossing film of all time.
EA aims to make the film a genuine experience for dedicated Sims fans, complete with plenty of Easter eggs and references to the game’s rich history. “There will be Freezer Bunnies,” Gorman told Variety, hinting that fan-favourite moments, like a pool without a ladder, might make an appearance.
In addition to the movie news, EA shared updates on the future of The Sims franchise. There are no immediate plans for a Sims 5 release. Instead, EA will continue supporting The Sims 4, focusing on updates and paid expansions for the decade-old game. The publisher is also launching a creator program, allowing players who design in-game content to sell their work through Creator Kits.
While The Sims 4 remains the cornerstone of the franchise, EA is exploring new directions, including Project Rene, a cross-platform multiplayer experience they’ve been discussing for years. An invite-only playtest for Project Rene is scheduled for this fall.
With The Sims expanding in both gaming and film, fans have plenty to be excited about as the franchise evolves.
