RainOne, launched in May 2023, initially offered a base package for R595 per month, providing fixed-5G speeds of up to 30Mbps, uncapped data, and free monthly calls and data for two phones.
Cell C, a former full mobile network operator, now relies on MTN’s virtual radio access network and Vodacom’s national roaming agreement. Cell C is currently transitioning its prepaid and contract customers to a more flexible network arrangement that allows them to use either network and roam as needed.
Rain’s RainOne package combines home and phone services, offering unlimited 5G home Wi-Fi and free monthly calls and data for two phones. Customers can also upgrade their max speed for an additional fee.
Rain’s fixed-5G network, combined with its mobile 4G network, provides nationwide coverage. The company’s spectrum acquisition in 2022 enabled it to become a full mobile network operator, joining Vodacom, MTN, and Telkom.
Rain previously introduced a standalone 4G mobile month-to-month package, offering 2GB of data, 60 minutes, and 100 SMS messages for R165 per month. The company also ran a promotion during the launch month, offering a free gigabyte of data to customers who depleted 80% of their allocation.
While Rain has faced challenges in maintaining its value proposition, the company’s focus on network expansion and improved services demonstrates its commitment to providing competitive offerings to South African consumers.
