French officials confirmed that Durov’s arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into illegal activities linked to Telegram. Despite not being encrypted by default, Telegram’s hands-off moderation approach has made it a popular choice for those seeking a censorship-free alternative to other social networks.
Telegram has played a crucial role in disseminating information about the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. Russia appears to have a keen interest in Durov’s situation, as the Russian Embassy in Paris has requested access to him. Durov, a Russian-born citizen of France and the United Arab Emirates, has avoided traveling to “big, geopolitical” countries to minimize attention on Telegram.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Durov emphasized Telegram’s commitment to neutrality and resistance to government censorship. He stated that the company’s goal is to provide a platform that aligns with its values and avoids undue interference.
