Zoom, the pandemic darling that became synonymous with remote work, has unveiled an ambitious new feature: webinars for up to one million attendees. While the prospect of a million-person Zoom call might sound like logistical chaos, the company believes it has a solution.

To accommodate such massive audiences, Zoom has introduced Event Services, a single-use package for large-scale webinars. This means that instead of spontaneously inviting a million people to a Zoom meeting, organizers must work directly with Zoom to plan and execute these events. The company likely needs to allocate substantial infrastructure to ensure a smooth experience for such a large number of participants.
Currently limited to the US, these mega-webinars can be purchased online. While the concept might seem absurd, Zoom identifies several potential use cases. Multinational corporations could host global all-hands meetings, live events and conferences could be streamed reliably, and celebrities could connect with massive fan bases through virtual meet-and-greets. Additionally, government agencies could engage with the public on a larger scale.
Zoom’s Chief Product Officer, Smita Hashim, emphasizes the potential of these webinars to revolutionize how organizations connect with vast audiences. The company hopes this new offering will contribute to its growth, which has slowed since the peak of the pandemic.
While Zoom’s enterprise appeal remains strong, the value proposition of million-person webinars is still uncertain. The concept raises questions about the feasibility and effectiveness of such large-scale virtual gatherings.
Only time will tell if Zoom’s massive webinars become a game-changer or a colossal experiment.
