Google will drop the Chromecast in favour of the TV Streamer

Google seems to be ditching the familiar HDMI dongle design of its Chromecast line in favour of a more traditional set-top box. Leaked images obtained by 9to5Google reveal the upcoming “Google TV Streamer,” marking a departure from both the Chromecast name and design.

The Google TV Streamer sports a slanted top that aligns with Google’s recent hardware aesthetic. The included remote control resembles the previous Chromecast remote, but with an extended design and a volume rocker added to the front.

An official unveiling is likely at Google’s hardware event on August 13th, possibly alongside a wave of new products including the Pixel 9 lineup (Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL, Pro Fold, Pixel 9), Pixel Watch 3 (and potentially a larger XL version), and potentially other surprises.

Many have been waiting for Google to launch a more powerful streaming device to rival the Apple TV 4K. While the 2020 Chromecast with Google TV offered a step forward, it didn’t quite match the performance of the Nvidia Shield, currently considered the best alternative.

In a few weeks, we’ll know for sure if the Google TV Streamer delivers a performance upgrade or prioritizes affordability, aiming for Google’s usual sub-$100 price range.
