Apple Watch Series 10 could have a bigger screen

Calling all Apple Watch owners with case of the “Ultra envy”! Rumours suggest the upcoming Series 10 might sport the same impressive 49mm screen size as its rugged cousin, the Apple Watch Ultra. This exciting upgrade comes alongside other potential improvements, including a slimmer case and a new chip that paves the way for future AI features, according to Mark Gurman’s Bloomberg newsletter.

The screen size rumour aligns with a leaked CAD render from last month showcasing a Series 10 with a two-inch display. Gurman suggests, and the render seems to confirm, that the design will remain largely unchanged. This means no fancy magnetic watch straps (at least for now). Personally, I (and likely many others) have accumulated a collection of straps over the years, and the ability to keep using them with a potential upgrade is a welcome detail.

The news on new health sensors is less clear-cut. Gurman reports Apple facing challenges with two highly anticipated upgrades: blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnoea detection. The blood pressure monitor’s reliability is reportedly not meeting Apple’s standards, and the inability to use the previously banned blood oxygen sensor is hindering sleep apnoea detection efforts.

Apple is also rumoured to be developing a more affordable version of the Apple Watch SE, possibly priced around $199 to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Watch FE. A potential cost-cutting measure could involve a rigid plastic case. While this might make the watch lighter and cheaper (cue thoughts of a certain other Apple product that could benefit from a similar approach – yes, we’re looking at you, Vision Pro!), the durability might be a concern for some users.

Finally, Gurman mentions an upcoming Watch Ultra 3, though significant design changes are unlikely. However, it will likely be equipped with the same new chip powering the Series 10.

So, Apple Watch enthusiasts, stay tuned! The Series 10 might offer a significant screen upgrade while maintaining your existing strap collection. However, keep an eye out for further developments on health sensors and the potential budget-friendly SE version.
