Minecraft 15th anniversary being celebrated with a Netflix series

The year 2024 marks a momentous occasion for Minecraft fans: the 15th anniversary of the iconic sandbox game! Originally introduced to the public in 2009, Minecraft’s official release in 2011 sparked a global phenomenon. To commemorate this milestone, Netflix and Mojang Studios have announced a thrilling collaboration – a brand new Minecraft animated series!

This computer-generated adventure will be brought to life by WildBrain, the Canadian animation studio behind popular Netflix shows like Carmen Sandiego and Sonic Prime. While specific details remain under wraps, the series is confirmed to feature an original story with brand new characters, promising to showcase “the world of Minecraft in a new light.”

Whether familiar faces like Steve, creepers, and zombies will make an appearance alongside these fresh characters remains to be seen. With trailers and previews likely on the horizon, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out!  Minecraft enthusiasts can rest assured that even if the new series focuses solely on new characters, Steve’s cinematic debut isn’t entirely out of the picture.  Earlier this year, Deadline reported that the long-awaited Minecraft movie is still in the works, with Jack Black set to bring the blocky protagonist to life alongside Jason Momoa.

In addition to the exciting news about the animated series, Minecraft has been showering players with celebratory in-game treats over the past few weeks. From free party add-ons to a commemorative map, cape, and wallpapers, Mojang Studios has packed the game with anniversary cheer.  For a complete look at all the anniversary goodies and announcements, head over to the official Minecraft website and join the 15th-anniversary festivities!
