You can now hum to YouTube Music to search a song

YouTube Music for Android is finally launching a much-anticipated tool that allows users to hum, sing, or play a melody on an instrument to search for songs, as reported by 9to5Google. This feature has been in the testing phase since March.

To use this tool, tap the magnifying glass in the top-right corner and look for the waveform icon next to the microphone icon. Tap the waveform icon and start humming or singing. A fullscreen results page will quickly display the cover art, song name, artist, album, release year, and other relevant details about the song. The software builds on the Pixel’s Now Playing feature, which uses AI to match the sound to the original recording.

This tool is part of a server-side update with version 7.02 of YouTube Music for Android. There is currently no information on its availability for iOS, though it is likely to be released soon.

While new to YouTube Music, this feature is not entirely novel. Google Search introduced a similar tool in 2020, and the regular YouTube app began offering a comparable feature last year. Additionally, the online music streaming platform Deezer released a “hum to search” tool in 2022.
