Microsoft will bring exclusive games to PlayStation 5

Rumours suggest Microsoft’s gaming division is contemplating a significant shift in its approach to major exclusives, potentially signalling a monumental change in policy. While speculation has been going around regarding the arrival of titles like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, recent reports indicate a broader plan to bring blockbuster Xbox exclusives to PS5.

XboxEra reported that Microsoft plans to launch Bethesda’s highly anticipated title, Starfield, on PS5 later this year, following the release of the Shattered Space expansion. The company is reportedly acquiring more PS5 development kits to facilitate porting its games to Sony’s console. Additionally, MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is rumoured to be headed to PS5 shortly after its debut on PC, Xbox, and Game Pass.

The revelation comes amid the fallout from the Federal Trade Commission’s failed attempt to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In court, then-Bethesda vice president Pete Hines confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was originally intended for multiple consoles before Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media shifted it to an Xbox exclusive. Similar speculations surrounded Bethesda’s Starfield and Redfall.

Reports suggest Hi-Fi Rush may arrive on Switch and PS5 as early as this quarter, with the possibility of the Gears of War series following suit, according to GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb.

The underlying motivation behind Microsoft’s potential shift is financial gain. The Game Pass model may not be sustainable for high-budget titles, prompting Microsoft to explore additional revenue streams by expanding their reach to PS5. This strategic move aligns with Microsoft’s recent efforts to bolster profitability in its gaming division, including significant layoffs and the completion of the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

While Microsoft previously indicated platform availability decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis, some titles, like Starfield, were initially earmarked as exclusives for Xbox, PC, and Game Pass. However, exceptions have been made, such as Minecraft Dungeons’ availability on multiple platforms.

This shift raises questions about Xbox’s position in the gaming industry. While console allegiance is subjective, the prospect of major Xbox exclusives landing on PS5 may unsettle some players who chose Xbox as their primary console. This move could also impact gamers who cannot afford multiple consoles, potentially feeling disadvantaged if Xbox titles are released alongside PS5 exclusives.

More details about Microsoft’s multi-platform strategy are expected to emerge in an upcoming business update event. Xbox Gaming CEO Spencer’s assurance to the community to “stay tuned” suggests that further clarity on the company’s vision for the future of Xbox is around the corner.
