In October 2023, X introduced audio and video calling for iOS users, and now, the same feature is making its way to Android. @enriquebrgn, an engineer at X, excitedly shared the news in a recent post: “Audio and video calls on X are gradually rolling out for Android users today! Make sure to update your app and connect with your loved ones.”

The inception of video chat on the platform was initially announced by Linda Yaccarino, X’s CEO, in August of the previous year. This unveiling was part of her and owner Elon Musk’s ambitious plan to transform the app into an all-encompassing platform. While the privileges of this expansive plan, such as audio and video calls, are primarily reserved for premium subscribers, anyone can receive calls, regardless of whether or not they are subscribers.
For users content with existing options like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Teams, X offers an easy way to disable calls. Navigate to settings, select privacy and safety, and then direct messages. Here, you’ll find an option to enable or disable audio and video calling, providing users control over their communication preferences. Alternatively, you can manage who can call you on X, with options including contacts from your address book, verified users, and those you follow. These restrictions serve as a useful tool to prevent unwanted calls, as the caller doesn’t necessarily need your phone number to reach out.
