2024 is being declared the “year of the AI PC” by Microsoft, and they’re making a bold statement with a significant change to the keyboard on new laptops and PCs: the Copilot key. This dedicated button marks the first major alteration to the Windows PC keyboard layout in nearly 30 years and signifies Microsoft’s commitment to weaving AI seamlessly into the computing experience.

The Copilot key replaces the rarely used menu key (application key) located next to the right-hand alt key on most keyboards. Its placement mirrors the dedicated Office key introduced on Microsoft’s own keyboards in 2019. Pressing the Copilot key instantly launches the built-in Windows Copilot tool, a ChatGPT-like chatbot that can answer queries, perform actions within Windows, and offer personalized assistance.
While the Copilot key’s primary function is launching Windows Copilot, it adapts to regional availability. In countries where Windows Copilot isn’t yet accessible, the key instead opens Windows Search. Additionally, Microsoft hasn’t ruled out introducing future keyboard shortcuts in combination with the Copilot key, potentially expanding its functionality.
Specific OEMs incorporating the Copilot key remain under wraps, with official announcements set for CES 2024 and beyond. However, Microsoft confirms that “new Windows 11 PCs from our ecosystem partners” will begin sporting the key later this month, gradually rolling out through Spring. This timeframe coincides with rumoured launch dates for the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 models, which have been confirmed to include the dedicated Copilot key.
The Copilot key is just one piece of Microsoft’s larger AI-powered vision for Windows in 2024.
