The SuperFlex mobile plan was launched by South Africa’s second-largest mobile network operator in mid-September, offering an enticing package that includes unlimited voice minutes and SMS messages, along with a customizable data allocation, all starting at R299 per month.
MTN SuperFlex stands out as an online, SIM-only, month-to-month tariff plan, emphasizing simplicity, customization, and flexibility. MTN underscored this by stating, “No paperwork, no contract lock-in, no credit checks, and unlimited calls and SMSs” in its announcement last month.
However, there was a significant hurdle for potential subscribers interested in this offering – the inability to migrate an existing number onto MTN SuperFlex. Regardless of whether one is an existing MTN postpaid or prepaid subscriber or a customer porting in from another network, currently, there is no option to purchase SuperFlex using an existing number. The only path to accessing MTN SuperFlex is to order a new SIM card through MTN’s website.
Encouragingly, MTN has confirmed its intentions to address this limitation. Jacqui O’Sullivan, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at MTN South Africa, stated, “Features such as bringing your own MTN (or ported-in) prepaid number, or joining using an eSIM enabled cell phone, are already in development, to further enhance the product.”
The base MTN SuperFlex package, priced at R299 per month, offers 10GB of data. Subscribers have the option to upgrade to 15GB for R399 or 20GB for R479 per month. Furthermore, customers have the flexibility to adjust their data allocations at any time through the MTN app, with changes taking effect on their next anniversary date.
O’Sullivan described SuperFlex as an innovative product that provides South Africans with access to a “hybrid plan,” distinct from traditional “fully contract” or “fully prepaid” options. This hybrid nature affords customers the advantages of both prepaid and contract plans, offering greater control and flexibility in data usage.
MTN’s terms and conditions emphasize that there is no fair usage threshold for unlimited voice minutes and SMS messages, but these features are intended for consumer use only. Usage will be monitored, and subscribers will receive notifications if any misuse is detected. MTN reserves the right to suspend SuperFlex services in the event of abuse.
The terms and conditions specify that SuperFlex is a promotional product available from September 15, 2023, to February 29, 2024. MTN retains the option to shorten or extend this promotional period based on performance and long-term viability.
Additionally, any unused data from the recurring subscription will automatically roll over to the following month, with a two-month limit on unused data value.
