Capitec has introduced its inaugural prepaid bundle through its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Capitec Connect, offering a substantial 10GB of monthly mobile data for only R199.

Since its launch in September 2022, Capitec Connect has opted to forgo bundle offerings, instead implementing a straightforward flat rate for data, minutes, and SMS services, with costs deducted from airtime. Capitec’s data charge stands at a competitive R45 per GB, making it an attractive option for customers seeking low-end data bundles. However, the appeal of this approach diminishes as data consumption increases.
In contrast to most network providers, where higher data allocations yield cost savings per gigabyte, Capitec Connect’s flat-rate pricing remains unchanged. For instance, consuming 10GB of mobile data on Capitec Connect’s flat-rate model would cost R450. Therefore, the newly introduced bundle represents a substantial 56% cost saving.
Francois Viviers, Capitec’s Group Executive of Marketing and Communications, highlighted that customer feedback had demonstrated a growing demand for larger and more cost-effective data bundles. He noted that customers who consume significant data volumes each month prefer lower prices on larger bundles over non-expiry options.
The 10GB prepaid bundle from Capitec Connect offers versatile usage options, such as 64 hours of uninterrupted music streaming, 32 hours of connectivity for video calls and online meetings, and the ability to download 10 movies or engage in 500 hours of internet browsing and online learning.
Capitec has issued over 1 million Capitec Connect SIM cards since its 2022 launch and aims to meet the evolving needs of its customers by providing affordable and flexible mobile data options. The R199 bundle represents a significant cost saving compared to offerings from major mobile network operators like Vodacom and MTN, while also remaining competitively priced in comparison to other MVNOs like Afrihost Air Mobile.
