Twitter is now ‘X’ – bye, bye, birdie

Elon Musk is spearheading a rebranding effort for Twitter that is now fully underway, as evident from a series of late-night tweets on Saturday. Musk shared that the company’s iconic bird logo and name will soon be replaced, and going forward, the platform will simply be known as “X.”

“We shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds,” Musk tweeted. He further disclosed in a Twitter space that the Twitter logo would be changed on Sunday, expressing regret that the process took longer than expected.

Musk’s preference for the “X” branding has been evident in his previous ventures as well. He co-founded a banking startup called x.com back in 1999, and his recently-announced AI venture is named xAI. Moreover, Twitter’s holding company was rebranded to X Corp in April. The tech mogul envisions X as transforming Twitter into an “everything app.” Although specifics on this vision remain scarce, it is believed to emulate apps like WeChat, widely popular in China, which combines social networking with various everyday activities, such as payments and shopping.

The transition to the new brand is already underway. In certain markets, the former bird logo has been replaced with an official new X logo. On the web version, the Twitter logo has already been substituted with the X logo, indicating the realization of Musk’s initial vision for Twitter as an “everything app” following his $44 billion acquisition of the platform in November. Presumably, the mobile app versions will also adopt the X logo once they are updated. However, some references to Twitter still remain on the main web login prompt.

The change in logo came about after Musk requested people to submit logo ideas, promising to go live worldwide the next day if a suitable X logo was submitted. A Twitter user named Sawyer Merritt created a video that Musk pinned and adopted as his own profile photo, featuring the new X logo.

Based on a glyph from Special Alphabets 4, the X logo is considered an “interim” design, leaving room for potential changes in the future. As Musk’s rebranding initiative continues to unfold, the tech world eagerly awaits to see the transformation of the platform into the visionary “X.”
