MultiChoice to launch Showmax 2.0 this year

MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela has announced that a significantly upgraded version of Showmax, the streaming platform, will be launched by the end of this year. The new iteration, referred to as “version 2,” will incorporate strategic and technical input from MultiChoice’s new partner and co-investor, NBCUniversal.

In March, MultiChoice revealed that NBCUniversal would acquire a 30% stake in Showmax as part of a plan to establish the leading internet video streaming platform in Africa. The partnership encompasses technology supply and the provision of new content to Showmax subscribers. MultiChoice will retain a 70% stake in the company.

Mawela explained that the collaboration with NBCUniversal ensures Showmax has a “secure pipeline” of international content for an extended period. He highlighted that NBCUniversal’s vast engineering resources will enable Showmax to access the best technology available.

Showmax version 2, scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter, will feature an expanded lineup of content, improved product offerings, an enhanced user interface, and more live sport streaming options. Furthermore, the platform will be underpinned by coverage of the English Premier League.

Mawela emphasized that Showmax will continue to operate as a separate offering, distinct from DStv, appealing to the growing streaming population. He acknowledged that some users might desire sports content alongside their streaming experience.

Additionally, MultiChoice is collaborating with Sky on the development of DStv Glass, a television hardware solution. The integrated flat-screen TV and soundbar, accompanied by a sleek user interface, will be launched in South Africa within the next 18 months. Originally planned for release this year, the launch was delayed to fine-tune the offering to better suit the local audience’s needs.

Mawela explained that during discussions with Sky, it became evident that the UK and South African markets had distinct differences. The streaming preferences and conditions in South Africa required a customized solution tailored to local broadband penetration and lower bitrates. Mawela assured that DStv Glass would be launched in 2024, offering a unique and optimized television viewing experience.

The upcoming developments, including the enhanced Showmax platform and the introduction of DStv Glass, demonstrate MultiChoice’s commitment to evolving its offerings to cater to the preferences and needs of its customers.
