Vodacom is launching eSIM to personal and business customers

Vodacom, a leading South African telecommunications operator, has announced the launch of full eSIM support for both personal and business customers. The operator recently updated its website with terms and conditions for eSIMs, offering the convenience of embedded SIM technology to its customers across various packages, including prepaid, top-up, and post-paid.

eSIMs, also known as embedded SIMs, utilize a built-in integrated circuit card chip and dedicated software to provide mobile connectivity without the need for a physical SIM card. This feature offers numerous benefits, such as the ability to access mobile services without physically inserting a SIM card or switching providers by simply swapping out a physical SIM. It is particularly advantageous for frequent travellers who need to use different mobile networks to avoid expensive roaming charges.

Additionally, eSIMs enable mobile connectivity on smaller devices that may not have sufficient space for a physical SIM tray, such as smartwatches and fitness bands. Vodacom has already provided eSIM support for select smartwatches since March 2019 and subsequently expanded it to several flagship smartphones. However, until now, customers were required to have a top-up or post-paid contract to utilize these features.

The newly launched eSIM service is compatible with all smartphones purchased from Vodacom or other authorized providers within approved regions. Vodacom advises that devices sourced from outside South Africa may not be compatible due to management limitations or regional locks. In such cases, customers are advised to contact the store where the device was purchased as Vodacom cannot make any changes to the device.

Prepaid subscribers interested in obtaining an eSIM will need to visit a Vodacom-branded store. However, availability may vary, and customers may be directed to alternative outlets with eSIMs in stock. During the sign-up process, customers must specifically request an eSIM instead of a physical SIM card and complete the RICA “know your customer” process, as required with physical SIMs.

Prepaid subscribers will need to scan a QR code from a second till slip provided with their eSIM purchase using their phone’s SIM manager settings. On the other hand, top-up or post-paid customers will receive their eSIM details via their Vodacom-linked email address.

While the Vodacom eSIM can be used alongside a physical SIM card, customers cannot have two eSIMs active simultaneously. eSIM support is primarily available on flagship smartphones and smartwatches, including recent Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S series, and Huawei Mate and P-series devices. Apple, for instance, has removed the physical SIM card slot from all models sold in the US starting with the iPhone 14, citing improved security and the potential for utilizing the space for other components or enhancing battery capacity in the future.
