According to a report from WABetaInfo, a feature that allows users to share animated emojis on WhatsApp is currently under development. The feature has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp Desktop beta and will be available on all app versions at a later date.

It is said that the animated version of an emoji will be sent by default if available, and users may not be able to turn off the animation. However, WhatsApp is expected to add a toggle within settings to allow users to disable the feature if needed.
The animated emoji was designed using Lottie, a library that enables the creation of adjustable animations that are small in size. Although the feature has only been seen on web and desktop clients, WhatsApp is reportedly working on bringing it to iOS and Android apps.
This addition of animated emojis is just the latest move by WhatsApp to enhance the messaging experience for its users. In December 2022, WhatsApp introduced avatars on its iOS and Android apps, allowing users to create a personalised version of themselves to use on the app.
The avatars resemble Bitmoji-style figures that can be used as profile pictures or part of 36 custom stickers displaying various emotions and actions. The development of the animated emoji feature shows that WhatsApp is committed to improving its platform by introducing new and exciting features that keep users engaged and connected.
