SnapChat discontinues the Pixy selfie drone

SnapChat and its parent company, Snap Inc., has been in the news a lot recently. In a world where TikTok has taken over popular culture, SnapChat has taken a back seat. However, they still have a very dedicated following, which has been confirmed by the launch of SnapChat Plus. The paid subscriptions service for SnapChat has garnered more than 1 million subscribers much quicker than most predicted. Unfortunately, not all of its new products are performing as well. SnapChat introduced its Pixy selfie drone four months ago, and has already decided to shelf it.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Snap Inc. isn’t planning on releasing any future versions of its interesting Pixy selfie drone. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel apparently told employees at a Q&A session about the choice to no longer develop the Pixy line.

In case you’ve never heard of it, the Pixy is a small, lightweight drone that’s designed to be more approachable than other drones. It costs $230 and launches right from the palm of your hand so it can film footage that syncs back to the Snapchat app so you can share it with your friends.

In an interview, Spiegel had teased that the company might consider a second iteration. “The goal is really just to get it in people’s hands and have them play around with it,” he said. “And maybe we would make more with version two if people love the original product.” The drone appeared to have a successful launch out of the gate (as we reported at the first news that SnapChat Plus might be coming to market), as shipment times stretched out to months soon after the drone was released. At least for the moment, the drone is available to ship today, according to the Pixy site.
