ByteDance could compete with Spotify with TikTok Music

In a very similar way to how there were once few video-on-demand platforms but now they’re many, ByteDance has now applied for a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for what could be Spotify’s next big challenge. Enter TikTok Music.

According to the filing, TikTok Music would enable users to ‘purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics, in addition to ‘live streaming audio and video’, as well as offering the ability to ‘comment on music, songs, and albums.’

The advent of the new music streaming service could see a far more social take on digital audio than what we’ve experienced thus far, with the service describing less of a streaming service (overall) and perhaps more of a music-powered social network.

Let’s not ask Justin Timberlake how that went.

On another note, ByteDance’s existing music streaming app, Resso, is only available in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. At the moment, it isn’t clear whether Resso could evolve into TikTok Music should it see a worldwide launch, or whether the two services could be kept separate.
