It is the first time we are getting a good idea of what the series will be about, with the Prime Video streaming service spending around $460 million on the first series set to launch on September 2nd, with new reports saying the total cost including marketing and all other production costs reaching close to $1 billion.

The Rings of Power takes place in Middle-Earth’s Second Age, which is thousands of years before the main anthology of the much-loved Lord of the Rings movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. It will tell the story of how Sauron came to be and created the Rings of Power that led to the story in the movies.

Everyone has started digging into the backstory of this strange new era of Middle-earth, and a few crucial facts have come into focus. First, as already mentioned, the Second Age is nearly 3,500 years long. Second, it comes before the 3,000-year-long Third Age. Third, the “Lord of the Rings” story doesn’t take place until the very end of the Third Age. This means the “Rings of Power” story will be playing out between 3,000 and 6,500 years before Gollum topples into the Mountain of Doom, before Frodo gets the One Ring.

In fact, Mordor shouldn’t even exist yet if you delve into all the other books and short stories written and edited by JRR Tolkien and his brother.
