Meta reportedly halts the production of its dual-camera smartwatch

Meta (nee Facebook) has never had the greatest fortune with its hardware lineup, and now the company has been rumored to have shelved the development of its own smartwatch that would have featured two built-in cameras.

The device, which was codenamed ‘Milan’, would have used its dual camera system to stand out amidst a sea of smartwatches which (for arguably good reason) are camera-less.

Early reports indicate that the company has elected to shelve the product given technical issues and general cost-cutting measures. The smartwatch was expected to retail for $349 USD, which would have set it up against various Apple Watch models as well as numerous WearOS competitors.

‘Milan’ would have supposedly had a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for video call support that would have been contained within a small notch, while a larger 12-megapixel camera would be placed at the base of the watch. Instead of capturing wonderful snaps of wrists, freckles, and hair, the unit would need to be separated from a strap to function.

Meta is also rumored to have experimented using the device as a wrist-mounted monitor to pick up nerve signals for use as digital inputs for augmented reality.

It remains unknown if the company plans to issue another wearable in the future.
