This is when the Game of Thrones prequel will be released

After many years of rumours, script rewrites and production changes, we finally have a release date for the Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon. It will debut on HBO and HBO Max on August 21st, 2022. The announcement was made with a picture of a dragon standing over what appears to be a hatching dragon’s egg. It hopefully means we’ll have some of the magnificent flying beasts in the upcoming show.

House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s 2019 book Fire and Blood and is focused on, as the name suggests, House Targaryen. It’s set 200 years before the events of the hugely popular Game of Thrones, where the Targaryen lore played a big role in the battle for the throne and the freedom and subjugation of the populous.

It has been nearly three years since the show was officially announced, with the first trailer dropping in October 2021. Unfortunately it was very light on details regarding the plot, but we will definitely receive more trailers before the series launches.

Former Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are not involved with the prequel. Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik created House of the Dragon and also serve as series showrunners. Condal wrote the pilot script, with Sapochnik directing the pilot and multiple episodes. Martin, Condal, and Sapochnik are executive producing alongside writer Sara Lee Hess, Vince Gerardis, and Ron Schmidt. Greg Yaitanes, who directs other episodes with Clare Kilner and Geeta V. Patel, also co-executive produces the show.

The show’s ensemble cast includes Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Lady Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Coryls Velaryon, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Faben Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, and Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling. Also featured are Wil Johnson as Ser Vaemond Velaryon, John Macmillan as Ser Laenor Velaryon, Savannah Steyn as Lady Laena Velayron, and Theo Nate as Ser Laenor Velaryon.
