Bluetooth trackers have silently crept into our lives, with the most prominent examples in South Africa likely being Apple’s AirTag or Samsung’s Galaxy Tag – though both marque’s monopolies on their fields could soon be set to come to an end.
According to a new report, Google may be set to integrate default Bluetooth tag tracking options into future versions of Android. While this could naturally mean that Android phones may soon be able to track tags without the need for a third-party app, the development could also mean that Android users will soon have the ability to track errant tags on their person or belongings.
The feature could be used to resolve a security issue that Apple has already worked to mitigate, in the sense that the Cupertino company has unveiled several methods for users to check if they are being tracked by an AirTag – including, interestingly, an app available for Android devices.
The feature will likely be revealed more fully at Google’s forthcoming I/O event in May this year, where we’ll hear about other developments in the Android world as well.
