Sonos could soon expand into the home theatre market

While Sonos is already an established name among audiophiles, new job postings could indicate that the marque is set to expand into the home theatre arena, where it could eventually launch products such as a smart TV.

According to a job posting for a Head of Partnerships, Home Theater role, the company outlines work on a forthcoming “Next Generation Sonos Home Theater OS”. Presently, the brand produces meshed audio systems for home use.

According to early reports, the company is aiming to integrate its audio hardware into television sets produced by various brand partners in a similar manner to the way in which Google initially sought to embed Chromecasts into display units before settling on Android TV.

As the job role further elaborates, “The Head of Partnerships for our Next Generation Sonos Home Theater OS will play a pivotal role in connecting users to the content and services they love with Sonos quality experiences they’ve come to expect.”

It remains to be seen, however, whether that will entail the brand producing a fully-fledged operating system to tackle the likes of Android or Apple’s tvOS, or instead aims to further develop its sonic prowess as part of a push to expand its product catalogue and connectivity options.
