Google’s Chrome OS can now run on old PCs and Macs

If your elder PC or Mac needs a reboot, here’s an interesting idea courtesy of Google.

The Mountain View giant has today confirmed early access to a new version of Chrome OS dubbed ‘Flex’, which is designed to run on old PCs and Macs in enterprise settings such as in schools or businesses.

Chrome OS Flex is intended to look and feel exactly as it would on a newer Chromebook and will follow a similar update protocol as its mainstream counterpart – though Google has clarified that certain features may be dependent on the model of PC that the system is installed on.

The news comes after Google’s acquisition of CloudReady, a service which enabled users to convert their old PCs into Chrome OS machines.

Though the program is in early access, users can download Chrome OS Flex and take it for a spin themselves. The OS, however, can be safely booted from a removable storage drive.
