For many of us, Google’s Home Mini was a gateway into smart speaker gear and smart homes in general – but today the device sadly joins the rest of the Google graveyard.
The small and puck-like speaker was punted by the Mountain View company as its most accessible and affordable smart home device and was frequently given away to subscribers of various music streaming platforms in the US and beyond.
As of today, Google has announced on its online store that the speaker is ‘no longer available’ – meaning that the next entry consumers will be able to purchase (at least for now) is the Nest Home Mini.
The move marks part of Google’s bid to reposition its offering under the Nest banner – the original Google Home speaker was canned as part of a similar move to unveil a new ‘Nest’ product.
For fans of Google’s original mini smart speaker, there is some hope; the Nest variant offers several upgrades over its forebears – most notably a screw-mount, 360-degree sound, and an additional microphone.
There is no word from the Mountain View company as yet as to how long its original Home products will be supported.
