Many young people don’t remember the time before social media. But even before Facebook took over the world about 15 years ago, there was another pioneer that changed our world as we know it. MySpace was the first real social media platform that gained massive popularity and paved the way for our modern world of social disillusion. A new social media platform called SpaceHey is attracting tens of thousands of people, a clone bringing back the iconic look and feel of MySpace.

Created by someone identifying themselves with the alias An the Maker, SpaceHey is a very accurate recreation (read, clone) of that initial MySpace experience, for good or bad. MySpace came to prominence in the early 2000s, so many intrepid explorers of the early days of the internet is flocking to SpaceHey for that sense of nostalgia.
According to the creator, SpaceHey has been in development for about a year and crossed the 200,000-user mark over the last week. Its servers felt the strain of the influx of customers, as many started sharing it and discussing it on various other social media platforms.
Another alluring factor of the nostalgia-driven platform is that is has promised to be different than other social media platforms in one key area – users won’t be bombarded with advertisement content. It will also not be driven by specialised algorithmic recommendations and content delivery. “No algorithms, no tracking, and no personalized Ads – Feeds on SpaceHey are chronological and there is no suggested content begging for your attention,” the site states.
As was the case with MySpace, users can customise their profiles much more so than any other social media platform. It allows users to create and upload animated backgrounds, custom icons on their page and even customised mouse pointers when browsing their page.
