IndiEV unveils its electric car with built-in gaming PC

There is another new electric vehicle start-up on the block, called IndiEV. It has revealed a small prototype electric vehicle called the Indi One that is says will launch at the end of 2022. That is a bold claim, especially as they are saying that it will only cost $45,000 – cheaper than most electric vehicles and a very low price for a start-up’s first attempt.

IndiEV has announced that it will power the Indi One with a scalable lithium-ion battery pack, which will be built on a platform that is easily adapted and amended for more affordable or expensive vehicles in the future. Its new, “simpler” architecture will be used to make better use of the improved space in the interior, IndiEV says.

The company claims that the top-of-the-range Indi One will be the “first vehicle to have an integrated supercomputer” onboard. IndiEV says that the computer will power “all sorts of gaming and entertainment applications” in the car.

So, what does this “supercomputer” entail? Well, it seems it is basically a gaming PC – it is a custom Windows PC with an i7 processor and an Nvidia RTX2080 graphics card (so not even cutting-edge hardware like the RTX 3000 series), hardly a “supercomputer”.

According to an IndiEV spokesperson the machine can run “any triple-A game, any virtual reality game, any augmented reality game.” It will be running on a custom pair of 15-inch displays, with the one running the separate Linux-based information system of the vehicle, while the second will run the PC under the dash.

The company has said that a supplier in South Korea has already built twelve prototype bodies, that will be installed on their respective chassis soon. Not a lot of other information was shared about the vehicle, like drivetrain or battery capacity details. IndiEV says this will all come in the months to come.
