For the first time MTN South Africa is now offering uncapped fixed-LTE connectivity, priced from R499 p/m for a 10Mbps connection. While most uncapped plans in the industry is focused on fibre connectivity, this new fixed-LTE segment has been popularised by new private providers like Rain.

According to MTN the different speed-based fixed-LTE plans will offer their customers a “bottomless data experience.” That being said, it does come with the caveat of a fair usage policy – the 10Mpbs connection has a fair-use policy at 400GB, for example, meaning that after the customer has used that amount of data in a month their speed will be throttled for the rest of that month at 2Mbps.
The plans are available either on a month-to-month basis, or for a 24 month period if the customer wants a free router included. “Customers have a choice of a 24-month contract with a free router or may opt for a month-to-month payment option by either bringing their own qualifying router or purchasing one upfront through any of our sales touchpoints,” MTN said in a statement.
There are three different speed options available at launch:
- Uncapped data at R499 at 10Mbps, with a fair-use policy of 400GB;
- Uncapped data at R699 at 20Mbps with a fair-use policy of 600GB; and
- Uncapped data at R799 at 30Mbps with a fair-use policy of 700GB.
The fair-use policy cap will reduce the connection speeds on the faster two contracts to 4Mbps if reached.
“This will be the first time in the history of mobile that an uncapped home connectivity solution is offered whereby customers can choose their preferred speeds,” the company claimed.
MTN is entering a competitive market. Rain offers an “unlimited home 5G basic” plan, with speeds of up to 25Mbps for R499 p/m.
