MultiChoice launches DStv Internet fixed-wireless service

Another competitor offering fixed-wireless internet has entered the ring, and it may seem like an unexpected move. MultiChoice Group has launched a fixed-wireless internet service called DStv Internet in South Africa, which offers several packages specifically designed for streaming content.

“DStv Internet is a fixed-wireless-access service, which means that customers can now get connected to the Internet with a Sim card and Wi-Fi router – a perfect option for those who do not have fibre in their residential area but want to access the Internet regularly using various devices in their home,” the company said in a statement.

The data packages are designed to serve customers who do not have access to fibre or other broadband infrastructure in their areas. DStv is under significant pressure as the streaming services start eating into their subscription base, offering similar packages at a much lower price. DStv is hanging on due to its comprehensive sporting catalogue. The company has said this move is part of its “ongoing evolution from a traditional video entertainment business”.

There are three packages available at launch, all two year contracts:

  • 25GB anytime and 25GB night data: R299/month
  • 110GB anytime and 110GB night data: R499/month
  • 220GB anytime and 220GB night data: R799/month

MultiChoice is partnering with MTN South Africa to access the data packages, which will connect to the telecommunication giant’s 4G/LTE network, but not the 5G network (at this time). This may change at some point, but there is no indication of when this might happen.

DStv Internet is a standalone service and does not require and active DStv subscription. It includes a new service called DStv Trusted Home, which gives users access to and iOS and Android app that puts them in control of their Wi-Fi. It is an AI-driven network security and Wi-Fi management tool that protects the home network from online security threats and malicious attacks, and includes parental control features.

As part of the launch of DStv Internet, the first 20 000 customers will receive a free 12-month subscription to the DStv Trusted Home app. After 12 months, customers will have the chance to opt out or add a monthly charge of R30 to their DStv Internet bill.
