Asus launches ROG Phone 5 with gaming audio quality focus

Another day, another gaming phone launch. Or rather, gaming phones; Asus has introduced three new gaming phones – the ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate. Gamers should be well aware of the Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand in laptops, but perhaps not in phones. It aims to bring the best possible gaming experience to smartphones as the industry keeps growing quickly.

This is the first year that ROG has built three separate variants in the line-up, eyeing a diverse gaming crowd. The base model ROG Phone 5 starts at 800 Euro and has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the most premium ROG Phone 5 Ultimate costs 1,300 Euro and comes with massive 18GB of RAM and 512GB storage. It is the second gaming phone to launch within a week with the record-breaking 18GB of RAM.

The entire series has a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a record 300Hz touch sampling rate. The touch latency from the display is only 23.4ms and it has a peak brightness of 1200 nits. In case you weren’t aware, those are impressive numbers.

All three phones are powered by the flagship Snapdragon 888. While other ROG phones in the past were powered by the Plus or G version of the Snapdragon generation (focused on gaming), these devices do without it.

ASUS is providing “Audiophile-grade” ESS Sabre with HyperStream II QUAD DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator with built-in Class G SABRE Headphone amplifier. Forget all that jargon – all it means is it is the first phone to bring back the headphone jack (after removing it in previous generations) in order to give gamers the best possible audio experience. The DAC will optimise headphones’ output, more so than any other mobile audio feature.
