Google launches Play Points in South Africa

Hot on the heels of its release in 12 countries, Google has officially launched Play Points – a new rewards programme – in South Africa.

Google Play users will now be able to accrue points on games, apps, movies – including purchases of in-game items and game subscriptions – which they will then be able to redeem for either Google Play credit or in-app items.

To sign up, users will be able to register for the loyalty scheme by heading to Google Play, then the menu, and then selecting ‘Play Points’.

Users will be able to earn Play Points by downloading featured free apps and games, and can participate in weekly points events to boost their earning rates. Accordingly, users will be able to progress through four levels – from Bronze to Platinum – based on how many points they have collected. Higher tiers include rewards such as a weekly prize.

In a press release, Mariam Abdulahi, Director, Africa Platform Partnerships – Android and Play offered that “more than 2 billion people in 190 countries use Google Play to discover blockbuster movies, apps that help you be more productive, and books that inspire imagination. To show our appreciation, Google created a rewards programme called Google Play Points that lets you earn points and rewards for the ways you already use Google Play.”

“Over the past two years, millions of people have joined the programme in countries where it’s available. From this week, South Africans will be able to sign up too”, Abdulahi concludes.
