Mercedes-Benz dashboard of the future is a 56-inch Hyperscreen

Electric vehicles are packed full of technology, and none more so than in its new layouts on the dashboards. Most have large, multi-screen dashboards and centre consoles, giving the driver all of the features and information they need at the touch of a capacitive display. Mercedes-Benz has taken this idea further, making the entire dashboard from side to side one giant display, dubbed the Hyperscreen.

The automaker has unveiled a 56-inch Hyperscreen, running the company’s infortainment software MBUX, which spans the entire width of the cabin in their EQS luxury electric vehicle. The EQS will sit at the top of its EV line – think of it as the electric S-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen includes the infotainment system, driver instrument cluster and a passenger display that adapts to the occupant. It will switch off the passenger display if the driver is alone in the car, for example.

The expansive display uses OLED covered in Gorilla Glass with an anti-reflective coat, and can auto-adjust its brightness (just like your smartphone) with the help of a camera and light sensor. According to Mercedes, it runs on an eight-core processor (although, not specified of which variety) and a hefty 24GB of RAM.

The software experience will be massively important in order to make the display as functional as possible. While MBUX is arguably the best all-round software package in a car these days, applying it to such a large surface will be an interesting challenge.

Mercedes is using AI that will suggest certain features up-front when you need them. For example, it’ll prompt you to call a specific contact if you regularly speak to them on the way home, it can lift the suspension of the car based on you location and will bring up the climate control settings if the weather has changed. The company is aiming for a “zero layer” interface where the most commonly used features or tasks are available right away without needing to go into menus.

We don’t have an exact launch date yet, but the EQS is expected sometime towards the end of 2021.
