The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi have announced their latest breakthrough in charging technology. It has developed a new 80W wireless charging method that it claims is miles faster than any competitor’s solution. The Xiaomi 80W solution is able to charge a 4,000mAh battery up to 50 percent full in eight minutes and 100 percent full in 19 minutes.

They currently already have the world’s fastest wireless charging technology, with the Mi 10 Ultra capable of 50W wireless charging. In China, fast wireless charging is widely used and a much sought after feature – which is why this is a major drive for the likes of Huawei and Xiaomi, understandably.
While the rest of the world hasn’t caught onto the trend as much, it is starting to become more important to the consumer. We generally get by using 10W wireless chargers, with the maximum speed in our mainstream devices reaching 25W. The new iPhone 12, for example, can only do 15W with a dedicated MagSafe accessory.
We don’t know when the new Xiaomi 80W chargers will start shipping, but it can’t be far off. The fact that it works on devices already available to the public is also a good sign that it won’t only be for dedicated flagship phones.
