The upcoming video game movie Free Guy has a very interesting, and more thoughtful premise than you would expect. Sure, it is a comedy – starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular character – but it does ask some existential questions.

The new trailer below includes some surprising philosophical lines, which the film will explore in the form of character in the video game that don’t know it isn’t real. They say that in a virtual world where “nothing you do matters,” it’s the connections you make with others that have meaning. This includes the connections between the player and the fictional characters in the game, but also between the game characters.

The whole film won’t be set in the game world, as there is clear interaction with the real world. The game seems to be a cultural phenomenon, one of those rare games that everyone knows (even those that don’t play video games).

The film would have released on July 3rd, but was delayed until December 11th due to the ongoing pandemic.
