Ring may have just officially entered South Africa with its range of IP cameras and eponymous small doorbells, but we predict that it won’t be long before local tech enthusiasts will be craving the latest addition to the brand’s catalogue -the Ring Always Home Cam.
Less of a camera and more of a drone, the Always Home Can is a fully autonomous monioting system which can dispatch a drone that will follow and survey a pre-mapped out route of one’s home before returning to its cradle. Should the unit detect a disturbance, it can issue an alert through a linked Ring Alarm system.
The Always Home Cam is destined to be an indoor-only solution and isn’t geared towards monitoring gardens, grounds, or other outdoor parts of your home. The unit records 1080p video and further only records in flight (as its camera is obscured by the cradle itself).
The device is serviced by enclosed propellers which should amount to some protection from the elements. Ring has assured customers that the device can’t be used for privacy invasion as the drone produces an audible noise – meaning it’s not entirely stealthy.
Ring has marketed the unit as a solution for checking home inconveniences such as whether you’ve happened to leave the oven on, or if the wind has pushed a door ajar. Of course, it also makes for a handy rapid-response tool to identify the source of an alert in a home environment.
If you can’t wait to get your hands on the Always Home Cam, you’ll unfortunately need to practise some patience. The device is destined to ship in 2021, and is expected to retail for $250.00 USD with no word on local availablity just yet.
