When Fall Guys launched several weeks ago it became an instant smash hit. Available at launch for free for PlayStation Plus members, a rarity in itself, and comparatively cheap to purchase otherwise, it has gone on to dominate the world. Millions of people are competing for crowns, with the family friendly game putting a new spin on the competitive battle royale genre.

The game was developed by Mediatonic, a UK-based studio. It has become one of the most successful indie games in history and isn’t slowing down anytime soon. It has also been extremely successful in its guerrilla marketing tactics, garnering more than 1.2 million followers on Twitter in the process.
Sony struck an exclusive deal with Mediatonic before the launch of the title, securing it to make it a free PS Plus title at launch – you have until the end of the month to take advantage of it. While Sony won’t disclose how many people have downloaded the title – citing confidentiality – but they have confirmed it is the most downloaded PS Plus game ever.

This strategy has been paying dividends for Sony in recent years. They struck a similar deal with Rocket League back in 2015 which is still an immensely popular game. It brought in a lot of money for Sony, has gone on to become a major e-sport and has since become a cross-platform success. It was then purchased by Epic Games, developer of Fortnite, in 2019. All indications are that Fall Guys will be just such a large success, if not more so over the next several years.
