Netflix announces its ten most popular original films

For the first time, Netflix is revealing its most popular blockbusters. As more people than ever turn to streaming service for their viewing pleasure, the billions invested by Netflix into their original content comes more into focus. And it seems that luring in the actors and actresses with major star power has been a good strategy.

According to Netflix, Extraction is its most successful movie to date, having streamed more times in the first four weeks after release than any other. It is an action thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, which sits atop the list of ten films with the biggest reach after release.

The streaming service is notoriously secretive about its viewership numbers – it only recently began releasing very specific, handpicked data points in its quarterly financial results calls. But pressure from investors have been mounting and convinced Netflix to publish more of its viewership data. The coronavirus pandemic and associated quarantines have seen the company achieve record growth as people stay at home and binge, so the timing of the transparency could definitely viewed as contrite.

All four of the most-watched films are action movies or thrillers with prominent movie stars: Chris Hemsworth, Sandra Bullock, Mark Wahlberg, and Ryan Reynolds. There are also three comedies on the list, and the adult drama The Irishman. To compile these numbers Netflix has counted anyone who watched at least two minutes of the movie as a viewer.

The full top 10 list is as follows:

  1. Extraction: 99 million
  2. Bird Box: 89 million
  3. Spenser Confidential: 85 million
  4. 6 Underground: 83 million
  5. Murder Mystery: 73 million
  6. The Irishman: 64.2 million
  7. Triple Frontier: 63 million
  8. The Wrong Missy: 59 million
  9. The Platform: 56.2 million
  10. The Perfect Date: 48 million
