Apple Arcade is a subscription service offering top quality mobile games. For a monthly fee of $4.99 per month, or R84.99 per month in South Africa, you can play an unlimited number of games on the platform. While many have tried out the trial of the subscription service, it seems Apple isn’t happy with the retention and conversion to paying customers.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is cancelling contracts for some games still in development after deciding that these games didn’t have the level of “engagement” it was after. Apple wants the games coming to the platform to “keep players hooked” in order to convert free trial members to paying subscribers.
When having a conversation with developers, Apple reportedly called out the game Grindstone as a good example of what they are looking for to keep players engaged. They said that they were always planning to “grow and evolve” the Apple Arcade library, taking into account the feedback they have received.
Apple wants to deliver continuous quality content, with fresh games dropping on the platform every month. Some of the best games on the platform at the moment include:
Steven Universe: Unleash the Light
Shinsekai: Into the Depths
Assemble With Care
Sayonara Wild Hearts
What The Golf?
According to sources, some of the developers whose efforts have been cancelled by Apple may be facing financial troubles as a result. There were development milestones that developers were paid for when hit, the cancellation of their games leads to short term uncertainty – even though Apple plans to use them for future projects. It will be interesting to see what effect this has on the quality of games on the platform.
