The revamped Motorola Razr launched in November last year with much fanfare. It was the first major clamshell foldable phone that harkened back to the original Razr, igniting nostalgia to the tenth degree. While it is a beautifully designed device, functionally it’s not up to scratch with modern flagships.

It has mid-range specs, a small battery a sub-par camera that meant no-one could recommend it to anyone for the eye-watering $1,500 price tag (other than people with cash to burn that want the nostalgia). The company hopes to solve all these issues with the new version of the Motorola Razr that is expected sometime in 2020.
According to reports, the new foldable will have a bigger battery, be 5G-capable and much improved cameras.
While the news should be taken with a grain of salt, it did come from Lenovo’s South Africa general manager Thibault Dousson on a tech podcast. He said that the new Razr could be coming around September.
“There’s a new iteration (of the Razr) coming out. From what I understand, there’s one in September, I think, coming out,” he said on the podcast.
While the internal specs will be upgraded, we still shouldn’t expect it to be a flagship competitor. It could be powered by the Snapdragon 765 chipset – firmly in the mid-range with 5G capabilities. The battery capacity will increase by more than 10 percent to 2,845mAh cell.
It is expected that the main camera will be a 48MP sensor (up from the current 12MP) and the inner camera will be a 20MP sensor (up from the current 5MP). It will come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage as opposed to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in the current version.
While these are welcomed improvements, the success of the new device will be very reliant on the price, once again. Nostalgia alone is not a good enough reason to pay such exorbitant prices for a good looking device with middling specs and performance.
