Well, this is a pleasant surprise. 2K Games is to launch a remastered version of the grossly underrated Mafia series. They have just released a short teaser showing they will share more information on May 19th.
The video teaser doesn’t give us anything to go by in terms of potential content or gameplay changes, simply highlighting the central themes of the Mafia games. Family. Power. Respect.
News that has graced our screens is that the remastered trilogy will be available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Most people will remember Mafia 3 most vividly – not only because it’s the most recent – because of the interesting setting of 1960’s New Orleans. Personally, the original Mafia is by far the best and an instant classic in my mind. One of my fondest gaming memories is watching my younger brother nearly break his keyboard and mouse in frustration as he struggled countless times to win the infamous Race Mission, me crying with laughter in the corner every time the car rolls and the protagonist dies.
The original was released in 2002, the second in 2010 and the latest was released in 2016. We don’t have a release date for Mafia: Trilogy but we are sure to get the information from 2K Games at their event next week.
The biggest reason the open-world Mafia games didn’t achieve the acclaim many think they deserve is because of Grand Theft Auto. Each one of the major Mafia releases were overshadowed by a big GTA game either just before or just after. The gameplay and mechanics are similar, but the locations, time periods and characters are so vastly different that we think the Mafia games deserve a serious look by anyone that hasn’t played them.
