The iPhone 5 was, and still is, the prettiest iPhone that Apple has ever made. Bold statement, I know – it didn’t have the flashy display with minimal bezels or rounded corners. But for many it is still the quintessential iPhone design. Sources claim that the upcoming iPhone 12 range will revert to that design language, modernised much like the latest iPad Pro.

The news comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, which will reportedly have flat steel edges rather than curved ones and pack a display that’s flat and flush with the body. It will have a glass at the back (like the iPhone 4 rather than the iPhone 5), keeping with more recent iPhone designs.
It certainly is a massive shift in design language from the current iPhone 11 range, which we don’t see Apple do very often with new iterations of their flagship smartphone. It will also, for the first time in several years, mean that the iPhone and iPad will largely follow the same design language.
The iPhone 12 Pro models are expected to have three cameras at the back, with two adorning the ‘lower-end’ models. We don’t expect a major reshuffling of lenses compared to what we saw on the iPhone 11 range, since they perform extremely well. Rather, we can expect some optimisations here and there, but the cameras will remain largely the same.
There should be enhancements with regards to the augmented reality capabilities, taking the LIDAR features from the new iPad Pro.
The Pro model will have a 6.5-inch display, and we expect Apple to reduce the notch size significantly (with some rumours saying it will be gone altogether). The biggest improvements in the iPhone 12 models will be the much faster processors, assisting with the aforementioned AR and also doing the heavy lifting for improved artificial intelligence capabilities.
