Apple to release slew of new products in 2020, including tracking tags

Apple is reportedly going to release a wide range of new products in 2020, making it one of the busiest years in its history. The Cupertino firm is going to release tag trackers, a new high-end set of headphones, updated iPad Pro, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air devices, a 4.7-inch LCD iPhone, and a new wireless charger (after the AirPower charger was cancelled).

This comes from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Cho Kuo, via MacRumours, adding that all these devices should be launched in the first half of 2020.

The Apple Tag, or AirTags, has been rumoured for a while stemming from a series of software leaks. It will be a Bluetooth tracker that uses ultra wideband (UWB) that was also used in the iPhone 11 range of smartphones and will be used to track down missing items. There are countless similar devices that’s been on the market for years, so it will be fascinating to see what Apple feels it can bring to game. Presumably it will mostly be used to track down iPhones, but that remains to be seen.

We’ve spoken about the iPhone SE2 (or iPhone 9, depending on who you ask) before, which will have the same design of the iPhone 8, but with the internals of the iPhone 11. It will have an LCD display, like the iPhone 8 had, and not the latest OLED panels Apple is using in its flagship devices.

They will also try to release a wireless charging mat again, alongside a new, smaller wireless charger. Back in 2017 Apple announced the AirPower wireless charger alongside the iPhone X, which could charge the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods all at once with multiple coils that meant it your devices don’t need to be placed perfectly on a specific spot to charge. This device famously never made it to market, with various issues in the design and manufacturing stage.

Apple is also working on “high-end” Bluetooth headphones. They will be Apple branded, so should sit above the Beats (which Apple owns) headphones in terms of price and quality. After the massive success of AirPods and AirPods Pro, it makes sense that Apple would want to venture into over ear headphones as well. Beats are generally seen as a fashion item rather than high-quality headphones, at least by audiophiles.

We were expecting refreshes of the iPad Pro, Macbook Air and Macbook Pro in any case, but it is good to get confirmation of that as well.
