Apple is hoping that making more ‘cheap’ phones will bring in those customers that they haven’t already snared. This strategy is long overdue, after the iPhone SE (which we loved) wasn’t as well received as Apple would have hoped. Analysts pointed to the fact that the design was too different to the latest iPhones as the biggest reason for a lack of take-up.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple will start production on this new cheaper iPhone in February and should be launched in March. We expect it will look like the iPhone 8, the design we had right before the current that has been around for three years already. It is rumoured to have a 4.8-inch display and the home button you don’t find on flagship iPhones anymore.
It is expected that this device will have some beefy specs, including a processor that matches that of the iPhone 11. We’re not sure if it the exact same chip or an older one that has been updated.
The price point is also going to be very aggressive – for Apple, at least – at $399. That puts it straight in the line of fire of the competing Google Pixel 3a and the upcoming Google Pixel 4a, which is a mouth-watering battle, for sure. The Google Pixel 3a brought the same amazing camera experience from the Pixel 3 to a phone half the price, which was its main selling point. What will the new ‘cheap’ iPhone’s selling point be? Camera performance has to be at the forefront to make it a reasonable buy.
The device will have 3GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Rumours indicate it will likely have colour options of space grey, silver and red.
