The electric scooter market is certainly hot, but we didn’t expect one of the biggest car manufacturers to join the fold. Sure, Audi is a major player in electric vehicles (having first proved their chops in Le Mans and Formula E), but we didn’t expect this play. According to the company, the Audi e-Tron Scooter will hit the market sometime in 2020.
This new product is a blend between a skateboard and a scooter (both of which have a sizable electric market). This new four-wheeled rideable can do about 20 kph and has a range of 20 km. It will cost around 2000 Euro.
Combining elements of an e-scooter and a skateboard results in a pretty unique-looking vehicle. Apparently you aren’t meant to stand facing forward, rather to the side like you would on a skateboard. The front handlebar is then used for acceleration and braking, with steering being done as you would on a traditional skateboard.
Audi claims this leaves the other hand free for signalling purposes. The scooter’s battery is built into its handle, where there’s also a small display that shows you its remaining charge level. You also have some lights on the front and rear (including braking lights). According to Audi, it will also have Bluetooth connectivity in for software upgrades and more customisable riding experiences.
This product is tying into its e-Tron car line-up, of course, but it is nice to see an industry giant venturing into this new space that is growing immensely. Whether we see this in South Africa is another question altogether, but with e-bikes already popular, who knows?
