Pick ‘n Pay’s campus store – in partnership with Electrum – will now accept Bitcoin payments in store for a limited time.
If you’ve acquired Bitcoin in the recent past and are looking for a way to spend your cryptocurrency, there’s some good news for South Africans – Pick ‘n Pay’s campus store, together with Electrum, will now accept Bitcoin payments in-store.
Jason Peisl, Head of Point of Sale at Pick n Pay, offered that “at Pick n Pay, one of our key values is to embrace change and encourage innovation and leadership. To deliver on that promise we are constantly working with our technology partners to find ways in which we can deliver valuable, innovative services to our customers.”

Piesl continued to state that “Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin are still relatively new payment concepts, yet we have been able to effectively demonstrate how we are able to accept such alternative payments.”
The endeavour was conducted in conjunction with Electrum – a Cape Town-based technology firm which provided the cloud-based enterprise payments platform – while Luno provided the Bitcoin infrastructure for the project.
The news comes in conjunction with an announcement from the World Wide Web Consortium earlier this week that will see cryptocurrencies accepted as a payment method in popular browsers in the not-so-distant future. Of course, merchants themselves will have to accept any cryptocurrency as tender in the first place for consumers to purchase goods with the likes of Bitcoin or Ether.
Earlier this year, Pick ‘n Pay trialled another payment system through the use of self-checkout centres in one of its stores in Ottery, Cape Town.
